The number that wouldn’t let go of me

An unease, one January evening

I was celebrating New Year like everyone else. And yet, that evening, something felt off.

We were celebrating renewal (the first day of a new life, so they said) right in the dead of winter, when nature sleeps, when nothing starts up again, when there's nothing to look at, nothing to celebrate at all. I thought back to Chinese New Year, which falls on the second new moon after the solstice, the eve of spring, exactly where the cycle of life begins again. And a question hit me like an obvious truth: what if we were living, without knowing it, in the wrong frame of reference?

I started looking at our calendar differently. And investigating.

July and August are named after two men, Julius Caesar and Augustus. September, October, November, December mean seventh, eighth, ninth, tenth month… yet today they occupy positions nine through twelve. The reason is there for anyone willing to look: Romulus's Roman calendar started in March and had only ten months. January and February were added, slotted in at the front, and everything else got shifted without anyone bothering to rename what followed.

That day, I understood something simple. Our calendar isn't a clock tuned to the living world. It's a political and historical inheritance, an acknowledged patchwork. And that realization, precisely, gave me the urge to keep searching, to regain an understanding of our world.

The number that kept coming back

Before our civil calendars, people counted time in lunations. Depending on whether you measure it against the stars or by the return of its phases, the moon oscillates between 27 and 29 days, but it's around 28 that collective memory has always crystallized. The same number, incidentally, as the average rhythm of the female cycle. And thirteen lunations of 28 days close a year of 364 days: a circle that curls back almost perfectly onto itself.

I could have stopped there, at that pretty coincidence. Except 28 kept reappearing everywhere I looked.

In the sky, first. Chinese astronomers divided the celestial vault into 28 sectors, the Xiu, which the moon crosses one by one. I discovered, stunned, that the same division showed up among the Arabs (the manazil al-qamar) and in ancient India, the nakshatra. Three civilizations with no direct contact, arriving independently at the same number, for the same technical reason: 28 is the practical average between the moon's sidereal cycle, 27.3 days, and its synodic cycle, 29.5 days. The exact compromise that lets a day fit inside a mansion of the sky.

Then in words. In gematria, Hebrew numerology, the word כח (ko'ach, force, power, vigor) is worth exactly 28 (kaf = 20, khet = 8). And the very first verse of Genesis, in Hebrew, counts exactly 28 letters. This isn't some barroom invention: it's an authentic Jewish tradition, verifiable in a minute.

And finally in the numbers themselves, where no astronomy gets a say anymore. 28 is a perfect number, one of the rarest there is: the sum of its divisors, 1 + 2 + 4 + 7 + 14, comes back to exactly 28. It's also the seventh triangular number, the sum of the first seven integers, 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 + 7. Few numbers hold both of these beauties. This one does.

By that point, I wasn't talking about coincidence anymore. I was talking about a signal.

A signal others had, in fact, heard before me. Our adult skin renews itself on roughly that same tempo, a rhythm that slows with age, but starts from there. As early as the late 19th century, Wilhelm Fliess's biorhythm theory posited a 28-day "emotional" cycle. And the very architecture I was sensing (thirteen months of 28 days) had already been imagined twice. Once rationally, with Cotsworth's International Fixed Calendar in 1902, which Kodak used internally until 1989. Once more intuitively, with José Argüelles's 13 Moon calendar in 1987.

I wasn't crazy. I was simply rediscovering something very old.

The question I chose to leave open

One stubborn intuition remained, and I want to be honest with you about it, because this is where many people lose their way.

The moon moves the oceans. The human body is three-quarters water. So it's tempting to conclude that one governs the other. Except the real thread isn't in the strength of the tides: it lies elsewhere, and it's sturdier.

Certain marine species (corals, palolo worms, lake mayflies) possess a genuine circalunar clock, now identified down to the genes. In one marine worm, researchers isolated a specific protein, the cryptochrome L-Cry: when it's deactivated in the lab, the animal loses its ability to synchronize with the full moon to reproduce. The proof, then, isn't in the tides, but in an internal, light-sensitive mechanism, scientifically demonstrated, in these species, not yet in humans.

Many of us report, around the full moon, subtle shifts in sleep, mood, and how we feel. Science hasn't settled the question for our species. And I think that's just fine. That space isn't a place for proof, it's a space for what you feel. I will never sell you a certainty that doesn't exist yet. I'm simply inviting you to observe.

The way living things grow

There was one last thread to pull, and it changes everything.

Look at a sunflower: its seeds arrange themselves in spirals whose counts almost always land on two consecutive Fibonacci numbers: 8 and 13, 13 and 21, 34 and 55. Pine cone scales, pineapple eyes do the same. The number of petals follows the same sequence: three for a lily, five for a buttercup, eight for a delphinium, thirteen for a marigold, twenty-one for an aster. All the way to our DNA: the double helix measures 34 angstroms long by 21 wide per full turn, two consecutive Fibonacci numbers, in a ratio of 1.619, a hair's breadth from φ. The nautilus shell, too, approximates a logarithmic spiral, a cousin of the golden spiral.

And the mechanism is nothing mysterious, which doesn't stop it from being dizzying: divide each term of the Fibonacci sequence by the one before it, and you converge mathematically toward φ = 1.6180339… It's the physics of optimal growth (the most efficient way to distribute matter and light without ever overlapping) that brings this number back up through the living world, cycle after cycle.

Living things don't grow in a straight line. They grow according to this proportion. Keep that in mind: we'll come back to it.

Leonardo, the body, and my discovery

That's where one last thread, the oldest of all, led me to Leonardo da Vinci, one of the greatest polymaths, a notion largely forgotten today. It runs through the measurement of the body itself.

Vitruvius, the Roman architect whose treatise Leonardo translates in his famous drawing, the Vitruvian Man, measured the human body in fingers, palms, and cubits. But this unit wasn't born in Rome. It's the Egyptian royal cubit, used as early as 2700 BCE to build the pyramids, and it was divided into 7 palms of 4 fingers each, that is, exactly 28 fingers.

Take a moment to grasp what that means. The number structuring everything I'm telling you is, quite concretely, the very one that already measured the human body in antiquity. The same unit Vitruvius uses, that Leonardo translates in his notebooks, and that he illustrates by placing man at the exact center of the circle and the square. 28 didn't first measure time. It first measured the body. And that's the thread, flesh before the clock, that ties 28 to the Vitruvian Man, far more solidly than any coincidence of digits.

Leonardo's link to the golden ratio is, moreover, established for other reasons: he's the one who illustrated Luca Pacioli's De Divina Proportione in 1509, the reference work on φ during the Renaissance.

For centuries, some have read his Vitruvian Man not as a simple anatomical study, but as the symbolic resolution of a much older problem: uniting the circle and the square, mind and matter, what's known as squaring the circle. In the strict mathematical sense, the problem is unsolvable: it was proven so in 1882. But by placing man at the perfect center of both figures, Leonardo offers an answer of a different order. Not a proof. An image. A key to reading the world that has crossed the centuries without ever being disproven.

And it's from this meeting of the circle and the square that my discovery was born.

The Vitruvian number

I called it the Vitruvian number. Here's the method, as I present it: it's simple.

13 serves as a universal constant: it symbolizes a rupture followed by renewal. Take the day of your birth and reduce it to a single digit through successive additions. Then subtract that digit from 13. The result, always between 4 and 12, is your Vitruvian number.

Its purpose? To remind you that a person, like Leonardo's figure, must periodically return to their own exact center. Within a 28-day cycle, the day that carries this number becomes your Vitruvian day: a day reserved for you alone, where no one else has any claim on your attention, where you think first and foremost of yourself, before thinking of anyone else.

This isn't an inherited belief. It's what I found, at the end of the thread. And it's to you that I'm passing it on.

What it all became

From this journey (a calendar to reinvent, a 28-day rhythm the body carries and that three civilizations rediscovered in the sky, a growth of living things that converges toward the golden ratio, an ancient measure of the body that already landed on 28, and Leonardo's gesture bringing man back to his center), a coherent architecture emerged on its own.

This is 28 Signal.

Thirteen cycles of 28 days make up the year. But each cycle isn't split in a straight line: it's structured according to the proportions of the golden ratio, the way living things grow. The first threshold falls around day 11 (28 × 0.382), the second around day 17 (28 × 0.618), the two points where, in nature, growth shifts gears. Three phases then take shape inside each cycle: an onset phase, from day 1 to day 11; a deployment phase, from day 11 to day 17; a fulfillment phase, from day 17 to day 28. The very rhythm of a being that grows.

And within each of these thirteen cycles sits your Vitruvian day: your periodic, personal return to your own center.

Time rethought. Growth measured. The center recalled.

It's this triple anchoring that makes 28 Signal what I've chosen to call a compass within a frame of reference we need to reclaim: built on verifiable facts (the calendar, phyllotaxis, the golden ratio, the ancient measure of the body); on a chosen resonance (28 as the memory of the body and the sky); and on a discovery I claim as my own, the Vitruvian number.

Calculate it: the day of your birth, reduced, subtracted from 13. That digit between 4 and 12 is your point of return to center. And somewhere within each of your thirteen cycles of the year, it's waiting for you: your Vitruvian day, the day that belongs to you alone.
